Senate to Hold Hearing Regarding Sen. Leahy's Proposed Bush Truth Commission

by Justin A. Martell

This article is a follow up to "Leahy Proposes Bush Truth and Reconciliation Commission:"

The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing this Wednesday to discuss Senator Patrick Leahy's (D-VT) proposed Truth and Reconciliation Commission that will investigate possible crimes committed by the Bush Administration.

While on the Senate floor last week, Leahy spoke at length about the issue. "How can we restore our moral leadership and ensure transparent government if we ignore what has happened?" He asked his fellow Senators. "I share that desire to move forward, and to reestablish ourselves as a Nation dedicated to the rule of law, respected and trusted throughout the world...We also know that the past can be prologue unless we set things right."

Leahy made it clear, again, that the “formation of a commission of inquiry dedicated to finding out what happened...not for the purpose of criminal indictments, but to assemble the facts, to know what happened, and to make sure mistakes are not repeated.” This was most likely in response to criticism from Republicans and his fellow Democrats, including President Obama, who have said that they only wish to "move forward."

There does appear to be a large amount of support, however, for Leahy's proposed commission. For instance, a USA Today/Gallup poll conducted early last month showed that 62 percent of those polled supported investigations into the Bush Admionistration. Also, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) spoke in support of Leahy, saying, "We cannot set aside our responsibility to take an accounting of where we are, what was done and what must now be repaired."

The hearing with the Senate Judiciary Committee will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4th.
