I've never really stopped since [the late '70s]... Even though it may seem like there's time between albums, it's not true because I produce other artists. So it was the end of 2008, after Frontman, my book, was out, I did a year book tour, and after that I got a phone call from Justin [Martell, Tiny Tim biographer], who was still in college, and he interviewed me for his book on Tiny Tim. He's the one who guilt-tripped me into putting it out. Because he had already heard these tapes that were circulating in the Tiny Tim community. And I said, "I'll tell you why – I've been busy." And he says, "Well, you've got to do this." So he pushed me into calling record labels, which I did, and I got a deal for this album so I could go in the studio, and overdub it like I wanted to, and the way that I told Tiny I was gonna do it then...Also, honestly, it felt like the right time to do it now. I think it's the right time for him. I think we need him. I think we need some interesting characters. Our celebrities now, if you wanna call them that, are not interesting. I live on the street in New York where the Waverly Inn is, where all the celebrities hang out. My block, that used to be this cute little Village block, is now wall-to-wall limousines and paparazzi. Now Leonardo DiCaprio lives on my street. And I'm not going to badmouth any of them, but no one is like Tiny Tim. And I just think we need some fun. I think Tiny brings that. That's why I feel the time is right now. In the liner notes, at the end of my liner notes, I wrote that I talked to Anthony DeCurtis, who is a good friend of mine, and I was in a restaurant, and I was working on how I was gonna put this album together, and I called him and I said, "Will you sing with me [on 'Straight Banana']?" So he was at the session, and he said, "You know, it strangely seems like the right time to do this." I said, "Exactly – I feel the same way!" So when I was saying Justin was guilt-tripping me, he really wasn't. Just when he mentioned it, it clicked – I said, "You know, it is the right time for this now."
